Develop and adapt active reading skills and strategies:
In class we painted pictures of two different things in the book Lord of the Flies. The pictures were of the Dark side of the book and the Happy side.

- I liked to paint the pictures of the book.
- Another strategy I would like to use is make a movie.
- Were i would like to make a movie about is the part in the book that they kill the sow’s.
Understand and respond to ideas, viewpoints, themes and purposes in texts:
Throughout the book the author talks about the beast.
We first saw the beast in chapter one as something which we do not see but it is a fear that comes out at night. Jack and Ralph think that the beast comes from the littleuns’ childish nightmares. The older boys try to comfort the little ones.
They build the little ones shelters so they are not afraid of the island and Simon says the children are afraid of the beast as if it is a real creature.
Then they start talking about the beast during assemblies. A little one thinks Simon is the beast. Piggy says like a scientist that there is nothing to be afraid of on the island unless they are afraid of people. Simon says “Maybe it’s only us.”
The body that comes from the sky is a beast and the boys believe that it attacks sam and eric.
They start giving presents to the beast in the form of the sow’s head to see if it would come to get his present. It talks to Simon and tells him he is a part of all the boys. She tells Simon that if he tells everyone about who the beast is then they should kill him.
Simon goes up the mountain to see if the beast is real and he discovers that there is no beast at all. He goes down to tell the others and they think Simon is the beast again. The beast is now a supernatural force this guy is simon.
The beast is within all of us and this is where we see him kill Simon.
Analyze how writers’ use of linguistic and literary features shapes and influences meaning:
Explain what each one means to you:
- A simile is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often introduced with the word “like” or “as”
- Personification is an ontological metaphor in which a thing or abstraction is represented as a person.
- A metaphor is a figure of speech concisely expressed by comparing two things, saying that one is the other.
Give visual examples of each one:
Example of Simile: When two things are compared
In the book Lord of the flies we looked at different similes.
Here is an example of the simile that I like : ‘’When these breezes reached the platform the palm fronds would whisper so that spots of blurred sunlight slid over their bodies moved like bright, winged things in the shade.’’
I think this means that the shadows are evil and disturbing the bodies of the innocent boys.

Example of Personification: Now the sunlight had lifted clear of the open space and withdrawn from the sky. Darkness poured out, submerging the ways between the trees till they were dim and strange as the bottom of the sea. ‘’It’s become night.’’ The darkness pulls out the sunlight.
Everything seems to come alive when Simon is there.
He brings life to things which are objects. Simon is a christ figure and dark things become light when he is there.

Example of Metaphor: They walked along, two continents of experience and feeling, unable to communicate. It shows us early on in the novel that Ralph and Jack are very different.

How did these literary features influence your experience with the novel:
They helped me understand the book better. Even though the ideas became more difficult, once I understood all the hard words, the ideas became more interesting.
